Indian Leather Craft, the handmade leather goods brand founded by Shanawaz K, is bringing bespoke, hand-stitched leather products to customers in India and around the world. Every piece is cut, stitched and finished by hand, using full-grain or top-grain leather, with a focus on products that last for years and look better with age.
From a Love of Watches to a Leather Workshop
Shanawaz K, known to his customers as Shaan, is an accountant by profession. His interest in leather began with his love for watches and a curiosity about how things are made. A single video on making a watch strap changed his direction. He started leather crafting in 2016 and is self-taught, learning through years of trial, failure and practice how different leathers behave and how they can be shaped.
Since then, he has taught himself to make more than 20 categories of products. Today Indian Leather Craft offers watch straps sized for brands such as Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Roger Dubuis, H. Moser & Cie, Audemars Piguet, Hublot, Bell & Ross, TAG Heuer, Bovet and Bvlgari, along with Casio, Seiko, Tudor, Omega, Cartier and Apple Watch. It also makes wallets, card holders, belts, bags, watch cases, passport covers, car key cases, keychains and accessories for Royal Enfield riders. Customers can also send requests for made-to-order pieces.
Made by Hand, Built to Last
Every Indian Leather Craft product is 100% handmade and hand-stitched. Shaan uses the traditional French saddle stitch, which makes each seam stronger and adds character to the product over time. He does not use artificial fillers or foam, which he says would defeat the purpose of a true leather product.
The leathers come from well-known tanneries, including Wickett & Craig in Pennsylvania, USA, which has been tanning leather since 1867, Horween’s Chromexcel from the USA, and Badalassi Carlo in Tuscany, Italy. The range also includes shell cordovan, Epsom and Vachetta leather. Finishing details such as Japanese Vinymo thread and hand-burnished edges are part of the brand’s signature.
A Growing Community Around the Craft
Indian Leather Craft has built a following by showing the work as it happens. Its Instagram page has more than 17,000 followers, and its YouTube channel has close to 400 videos that have drawn more than 1.7 million views. The brand ships across India and internationally, and its website carries customer reviews, including from buyers abroad.
