The Indian Kite Team secured Second Place and won the Silver Medal at the Jogja International Kite Championship 2026, held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The championship was organized by the Government of Indonesia through its Sports and Tourism Departments.
The event featured the International Kite Championship alongside National and Regional Kite Competitions. Participants competed in various categories, including Traditional Kites, Dragon Kites, Inflatable Kites, and Sport Kites. The strong coastal winds of Indonesia provided ideal flying conditions and added great excitement to the championship.
More than 100 international kite flyers from 17 countries participated in the event. Demonstrating outstanding teamwork, technical excellence, and dedication, the Indian Kite Team earned Second Place, the Silver Medal, and a cash prize. Vietnam secured First Place, while Lebanon and Tunisia shared Third Place.
The Indian team was led by Captain Adv. Shameem Paksan. Team members included Hasan Johar S. M., Kamal Peter, and Dilshad C. P., with Abdulla Maliyekkal serving as Team Coach.
Congratulating the team on its remarkable achievement, Adv. Shyam Padman, Chairman of the Kite Federation of India (KFI), said that the success reflects the growing strength of Indian kite sports on the international stage and is a proud moment for the nation.
He emphasized that Sport Kite Flying has tremendous potential to emerge as a major adventure and recreational sport in India, attracting children, youth, families, and sports enthusiasts alike. By encouraging structured training, competitions, and community participation, kite sports can promote healthy outdoor recreation, teamwork, discipline, creativity, and environmental awareness.
Adv. Shyam Padman further stated that the Kite Federation of India is committed to developing kite sports across the country through coaching programs, talent identification, and international participation. He also highlighted the immense potential of International Kite Festivals in promoting tourism, cultural exchange, local handicrafts, and economic development.
He urged the Central and State Governments, tourism departments, sports authorities, and local bodies to support the organization of large-scale International Kite Festivals in India, which can attract participants and visitors from around the world, showcase India’s rich kite-flying heritage, strengthen international friendship, and generate significant tourism and economic benefits for local communities.
The Chairman congratulated the entire Indian team for their dedication, discipline, and outstanding performance and expressed confidence that Indian kite flyers will continue to achieve greater success and bring more international honors to the nation.
